Put Down the Phone or Remote and Pick Up a Book!

read more1In the Bible, words, especially God’s words have power. God speaks and the worlds are created,

Genesis 1: 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good…

Psalm 33: 6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth. 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

The gospel writer of John refers to Jesus as The Word or expression of God.

John 1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

I am a preacher, writer, and communicator. I counsel others in how they use words in their lives. Yet, I find myself more and more giving into television rather than taking time to ponder words, especially by artists like the writers of the Bible who took time and effort to try and communicate through the written text as a way to connect with others and help people grow in relationship to God and others, essentially, to grow in love.
When we lived in Nashville, I gained an appreciation for songwriters and poets, people who lived for a lengthy period with a particular set of words studying and ordering them over and again. As I move often from sermon to sermon, newsletter to articles, when I apply the discipline to turn off the tv and pick up a book, I turn back to the poets for my devotional life. One of my favorite is e.e. cummings who broke not only standard rhythms but rules of grammar. Begin this week in gratitude and see how God might call you into service. I hope these words help.

i thank You God for most this amazing
e.e. cummings

i thank You God for most this amazing

and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
